Rules and Tips for Paranoia

Rules of the Game:

1.      This activity is in no way endorsed or approved by St. Mary’s Academy.

2.      There may be no capturing other players during any school hours, on school grounds, or anywhere within a 1,000 feet radius of school grounds. This includes Lunch, Senior Privileges, and Activity Blocks.

3.      Read #2 again. Take this seriously.

4.      All Nerf guns must be a bright and fluorescent color. There may be no covering of the gun in dark tape or cloth. Hiding the Nerf gun within clothing is not acceptable.

5.      Nerf guns are the only acceptable way to capture team members. No other equipment may be used (this includes, but is not limited to: Nerf footballs, swords, BB guns, paintball guns or real guns). Only Nerf bullets are allowed, and Nerf bullets must be shot out of the Nerf gun. Simply touching someone with a Nerf bullet does not count as an assassination. Modifying the guns in any way is not allowed.

6.      If there is a dispute over whether someone has been captured, it is the capturer’s call. Honesty is the policy. However, players can only be captured if the Nerf bullet hits them on the skin or direct clothing. Hitting someone on the backpack does not count.

7.      Each team must pay a fee of $25 to enter the tournament, which must be received by the Paranoia Captain by Wednesday, April 10th. This cost does not cover personal Nerf guns. Teams must supply Nerf guns on their own.

8.      All team names, player names, and team pictures must be submitted to the Paranoia Captain by Wednesday, April 10th.

9.      All Nerf guns must be approved by the Paranoia Captain by Wednesday, April 10th.

10.  Once a player on a team is captured, the name of both the capturer and captured must be delivered by phone call, text message, email, or in person on the same day to the Paranoia Captain. The capturer must be a member of the assigned opposing team.

11.  Once captured, the team member may not capture any other players from the opposing team for that round. Captured players must be honest for the duration of that round, not lying about teammates’ identities or their captured status.

12.  The Paranoia competition will last from Sunday, April 14th until Sunday, May 19th. There will be five rounds.

13.  Rounds will last precisely seven days, beginning on Monday mornings at six o’clock. The round will continue until Sunday nights at eight o’clock. Any captures made or reported after these deadlines will not be counted. Play will resume at six o’clock on Monday mornings, after the Paranoia Captain has posted the weekly competitions.

14.  Teams can either win or lose a round by capturing the most number of players on another team. If one team captures three members, and another only one, the team with the most players captured will move on to the next round.

15.  A tie will be marked as a tie. There will be no tiebreaker for beginning rounds.

16.  Whether there will be two separate brackets will be determined by the number of teams participating and announced by the Paranoia Captain on the website.

17.  All updates on Paranoia will be posted to the blog website, normally every night. Updates include those captured on each team, those remaining to be captured, weekly team assignments, brackets, and all other information.

18.  Both players and parents of players must sign an eligibility form, confirming that both have read and agree to the rules of Paranoia. Signed eligibility forms must be received by the Paranoia Captain by Wednesday, April 10th.

19.  No team member may be captured while in the shower or bathroom.

20.  No team member may be captured while at a religious event.

21.  No team member may be captured while at any type of school-sponsored activity.

22.  Team members cannot be captured during athletic sporting events, home or away. This includes athletic practice.

23.  If entering a house or private property to capture a team member, the parents or owners of the property must be alerted to your entrance, know who you are, and give permission.

24.  Parents of players are encouraged, but not required, to encourage fair play and allow opposing team members to enter the house, rather than deny a fair capture.

25.  Complaints should be submitted to the Paranoia Captain by phone call, text message, email, or in person, as soon as possible.

26.  Failure to comply with any of the above rules will result in removal from the Paranoia competition, for either the weekly round or the competition altogether. The severity of the rule violation will be judged by the Paranoia Captain, at her discretion.

Tips to Remember:

1.      Please consider your language and terminology before talking publicly about Paranoia.

2.      Words such as “assassination” and “kill” are not acceptable or appropriate, and will likely result in the competition being forced to shut down.

3.      This game has been played across the country, in cities such as Chicago, Dallas, New Orleans, Lincoln, Seattle, and others. There are articles online for concerned parents or other adults to consider. They also include creative suggestions for capture.

4.      Please exercise reasonable care and good judgment while participating in Paranoia. This includes following Oregon laws and standards.

5.      Daily routines that team members follow are not encouraged during rounds, as opposing team members can easily be aware of their opponent’s routines.

6.      Please respect opponents and fellow team members, as well as exercise good sportsmanship.
